The Long-Awaited Thompson Palm Springs is Now Open
One of the most anticipated hotel openings of 2023 — yes, we’re flipping the calendar back a year — is finally open in the sunny city of Palm Springs, California. And it’s great news for Hyatt loyalists.
The Thompson Palm Springs has been a long-awaited hotel, and we’ve been waiting to book following a slew of delays. But sometimes, the best things in life are worth the wait.
The now-open Thompson Palm Springs was originally ideated as an Andaz concept all the way back in 2015. While it’s unclear what exactly happened in the hotel’s formative years to lead to the swap to a Thompson property, the nearly 10-year wait certainly has a lot to show for it.
This Thompson has 168 rooms and 18 suites decked out in midcentury modern design and architecture from two design houses: B2 Architecture + Design and SMS Architecture. The hotel’s rooms will range from 380-square-foot entry-level king rooms with patios, 55-inch TVs and curated minibars to massive suites with direct pool access, San Jacinto mountain views and living areas with even larger TVs.
Later this year, Thompson Palm Springs will open an adults-only tower, a sort of hotel-within-a-hotel called Upper Stories. The tower will have an exclusive swimming pool, a lounge, 42 guest rooms and five suites.
The Thompson brand is no stranger to incredible restaurants and bars (just ask anyone who has visited Thompson Nashville about the rooftop bar L.A. Jackson), and the Palm Springs outpost is sure to be no different.
Dining options at the hotel include a restaurant called Lola Rose Grand Mezze, helmed by Quentin Garcia. According to the website, the restaurant offers a menu featuring Middle Eastern flavors with influences from other global cuisines. This restaurant will also oversee in-room and poolside dining.
Down the line, Bar Issi will offer a Mediterranean-inspired menu of small plates and cocktails while Hall Napa Valley, an indoor-outdoor wine-tasting outlet, will serve varietals from Hall, Walt and Baca Wines once open.
Burn off all those bites at the gym, which has high-end equipment from TRX and Peloton, plus everything else you’d need for a solid workout. Or, skip the gym and go shopping around the adjoining 35,000 square feet of retail and dining space.
Of course, no hotel in Palm Springs is complete without a pool, and this Thompson has two pool decks offering various city and mountain views, cabanas, lounge chairs and full-service bars with the aforementioned food.
How to book
Cash rates in October appear to start around $450 per night but can reach upward of $500 on certain dates. As this is a Category 5 property, World of Hyatt members can book award nights starting at 17,000 points per night on off-peak dates. There appear to be a good number of off-peak days through the end of the year.
Right now, Thompson Palm Springs has a Grand Opening Offer that includes a $100 credit at Lola Rose Grand Mezze, a special welcome amenity, a waived resort fee, complimentary valet parking, a buy-one-get-one-free ticket to the Palm Springs Museum, 15% off at the BMW Performance Driving School at Thermal and discounts at our local favorite, the Brandini Toffee storefront. This offer is available for stays through Jan. 31, 2025, if booked using the code “78439” by Nov. 30, 2024.
